You may already know a little about Japanese culture, such as sushi, karaoke and karate, however, studying in Japan provides you a window to the countless other aspects of this fascinating society! You will have the opportunity to experience all that Japan has to offer while developing your language skills by living with a Japanese family and studying in a Japanese high school. Traditions run deep throughout Japanese culture and there's no better way to understand them than by experiencing them for your self.
ETC students are placed in welcoming host families that provide a real experience in the country's modern practices and ancient traditions. Fathers are typically seen as the providers while mothers are responsible for the domestic matters. These traditional roles coupled with the unique rules governing family life and society as a whole, will make your host family stay a fascinating one. Your Japanese host family will be excited to share its culture with you while learning about your life in America.
About three-quarters of Japanese families live in urban areas. In cities, most families live in high-rise apartment buildings or small homes. Larger homes are found in less crowded areas.
Education is the focal point of Japanese society. High schools are well-known for their excellent standards and emphasis on learning. Compared to Western education, Japanese schools seem rigorous with classes running 6 days a week. ETC students are placed in either public or private high schools. But it isn't all book work! Study in a public or private high school gives you ample opportunity to make friends while participating in such afternoon activities such as kendo, baseball and calligraphy, among others.
The school year runs from April to January, however it is possible to begin studying at the beginning of the second semester, in September, and continue through until the end of the next year's first semester in June.
